What is Nitrous Oxide Sedation?

You inhale nitrous oxide (N₂O) through a small nose mask. After 2 to 3 minutes, the effect sets in: your muscles relax, your thoughts calm down, everything feels a little lighter. A gentle relaxation that you experience consciously. This method has been used in dentistry for over 150 years — few substances are as well researched.

Important to know: nitrous oxide is not a general anaesthetic. You're awake the entire time, can talk to me and raise your hand if something doesn't feel right. The fear subsides, but you remain fully in control.

Nitrous oxide doesn't replace the injection, but you won't feel it anymore.

Benefits of Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Works in 2 Minutes

You put on the nose mask, breathe calmly a few times — and after 2 to 3 minutes you notice the tension fading. It works that quickly.

Back to Normal Instantly

Once the mask is removed and you breathe oxygen briefly, the nitrous oxide is completely out of your system. You can drive, work, or pick up your child — just like any other day.

Precisely Dosed

I adjust the dosage individually during treatment — depending on how you feel. You always have a say.

150 Years of Experience

Nitrous oxide is no experiment. It's been used in dentistry since the 19th century and has one of the best safety profiles of any sedation method. Worldwide.

For Anxious Patients

You're not alone — one in three adults fears the dentist. Many of my patients postponed treatment for years. Nitrous oxide enables them to finally take that step.

Also for Children

Nitrous oxide is ideal for children. No stress from needles, no negative experiences. Children calm down, the treatment goes smoothly — and the next visit is much easier.

How It Works

01

Initial Consultation

Tell me what you're afraid of. The drill? The needle? The feeling of losing control? I listen, explain what nitrous oxide does and doesn't do, and answer all questions. No pressure.

02

Putting on the Nose Mask

The mask is small and sits loosely on your nose. Nothing confining. You just keep breathing normally — in through the nose, out through the mouth. That's all you need to do.

03

Relaxation Sets In

After 2 to 3 minutes you feel it: your shoulders release, sounds fade into the background. Everything becomes a little softer, more pleasant. You can still hear me and respond — but the tension fades.

04

Treatment

Now I carry out the planned treatment — and you experience it in a relaxed state. If you need a break, raise your hand. I adjust the dosage at any time.

05

Recovery and All Done

The mask is removed, you breathe pure oxygen briefly, and after a few minutes you're completely clear again. No drowsiness, no lingering effects. You leave the practice and your day continues as normal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is nitrous oxide safe?

Yes. There's hardly a sedation method that's better researched. You always breathe a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen — oxygen supply is continuously ensured. In over 150 years of use in dentistry, nitrous oxide has proven to be one of the safest methods available.

Can I drive afterwards?

Yes, and that's exactly what makes nitrous oxide so practical. A few minutes of oxygen after treatment and the nitrous oxide is completely out of your system. You can drive, work, or continue your day as normal. No companion needed.

Will I sleep during treatment?

No, you stay awake. You can hear me, nod or raise your hand. Some patients describe it as: "I was aware of everything, but it no longer bothered me." That is precisely the effect.

Who is nitrous oxide suitable for?

For anyone who feels anxious, has a strong gag reflex, or has difficulty keeping their mouth open — adults and children alike. Nitrous oxide is not suitable if you cannot breathe through your nose, during the first trimester of pregnancy, or with certain lung conditions. We discuss this during the initial consultation.
